Distinguished Old Boy Prasad Hemantha Kumara (1990) Appointed as Acting Additional Commissioner General of Prisons

Our distinguished old boy, Mr. Prasad Hemantha Kumara (1990), has been appointed to cover duties in the vacant post of Acting Additional Commissioner General of Prisons in the Department of Prisons.

The letter of appointment was officially handed over by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr. Nishan Dhanasinghe, on 1 January 2026 at the Prison Headquarters premises.

Mr. Prasad Hemantha Kumara joined the Department of Prisons in 2013 as an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons. Over the years, he earned successive promotions as Superintendent of Prisons, Special Grade Superintendent of Prisons, and Senior Superintendent of Prisons. During his service, he has performed duties at several prison institutions, including Trincomalee, Wariyapola, Bogambara, Kegalle, New Magazine, and Mahara Prisons.

In 2023, he served as the Director of the Research and Corrections Training Centre, and in 2024, he was promoted to the post of Commissioner of Prisons. He subsequently served in the Supplies and Services Division and thereafter continued duties in charge of the Operations and Intelligence Division, which he has overseen up to the present appointment.

Mr. Prasad Hemantha Kumara holds a Postgraduate Degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science (Special) Degree in Human Resource Management, a National Diploma in Human Resource Management, and a Certificate in Banking and Financial Management. He has also represented Sri Lanka at numerous local and international training programmes and conferences related to prison administration.

Throughout his professional career, he has carried out numerous exceptional initiatives dedicated to the welfare of prison officers and inmates, demonstrating outstanding commitment and service.
